Earliest signs in the history were used already in ancient times with the purpose of adverising goods. In Classic Greece they were used quite frequently as signages in bakeries although other professions like shoemakers or blacksmiths used them too. In those times they were simple paintings showing what you can buy in a given place.

As the industrial revolution became widespread and the consumption of the market grew rapidly the first written signs were used to advertise a given brand or product. As more and more people were able to read it quickly became a very effective way of catching one's eye through advertising some products.
